I think this is a subject  many of you have a lot to say about. Specifically think of media. Movies, books, TV, video games, music, etc. And how the sexism in those effect society as a whole.

Sooo say it!

I agree with arguments of all of you but i have to say two realy bad examples of sexism both male and female and one that i feel that is balanced

ok frist one is mortal kombat
I love the game series but i think everybody will agree that almost every woman character looks like a ninja themed striper and not as a warior

50 shades of Gray/twilight and almost every shojo manga or a romantic movie. I feel that they need to show only perfect guy for you is the one who is beefcake or bishie with personality of a best friend. I just feel that would be fair to show that you can be actualy happy and have a great relationship with guy may not be a hunk but he still loves you more then anything.

Good balanced show One piece . Ok maybe when it comes to looks not but when it comes to power i feel that women are equaly powerful as male characters wich i like

and Mc leods daughter. Whell its maybe a primerly a women oriented show and most male characters are sexier and perfect types.
But i feel that show showed up women who are beutiful but not hollywould plastic

I think is a really complicate topic, because, as many people have already say, the media show what they want to show, but at the same time I think people is partially to blame too, I mean, nothing about this sexism would be tolerated if people didnt consume it like a candy.

So my opinion is that, media and people are in a vicious circle of the sexism consumption, hell I even have some bad experiences on webcomics about this.

About something more specific I dont like about sexism... the first one would be the idea that a woman cant be attractive and smart at the same time, Oh come on!!! I mean if you go in real life a lot of succesful womans (lawyer, bussines, etc) are really beatyful womans, because they take care of it (wonder if this people havent seen models without make up)

The second is the bikini armor... thats.... just not functional :l

Wasn't there also that actress who said that she got used to dying in the movies she takes part in, jsut because she refuses to play the "helpless useless female"? I think she was in one of the Resident Evil movies as well...
There also seems to be this one rule in Hollywood that says that a female must be shown helpless and distressed at least once in a movie, or she dies. They believe it's because movies are mostly watched by men, and apparently, they simply don't like female that don't need help.
Plus, there's also that one short Bechdel-test about sexism in movies:
1. There must be at least 2 female characters
2. They must talk to each other at least once in the movie
3. The topic must be something other than men

YOu'd be surprised XP

That test was a joke.

Still scary how many works fail it, though.

I dunno...with girls I just feel like there's this concept of "traditional beauty" that a lot of girls feel kinda inferior to. Like I have short hair, and my face is...I dunno. I just feel like there's a lot of pressure on girls to conform to this concept of "traditional beauty": long hair, makeup, frilly clothes. I just don't like that stuff. I'm kinda more boyish than most girls, and I feel inferior about that.

my goodness, it's everywhere! there's a lot to do with it in Mary Sues, too. Most Gary Stus are just referred to as Mary Sues since a lot of people know about Mary but not as many about Gary. Even those who know the term "Gary Stu" still call over-inflated male OCs "Mary Sue" out of habit. they dont see the point in respecting the OC's gender if the OC isnt respectable in the first place. I agree with this, usually, but I'm kinda anal about details so sometimes I use "Stu". It is fun to insult an over inflated male OC "Mary" though XDD

A bit to show other shades, here is some series were a sexism-related issue appears positively differently than the dreaded main media.

- Fairy Tail - Okay, most important characters there are attractive, but I like how surprisingly gender-balanced the cast is despite that it's shounen: girls get epic fighting scenes, too! And both genders offer fanservice (Gray and subconscious stripping :'D). Maybe it's still sort of geared more towards guys, but Fairy Tail is still far more gender-balanced than many other shounen series.

- Karin / Chibi Vampire - I know, I know, there is an overload of pretty/sexy characters, too, but I like that we FINALLY have a boyfriend character who is an uglier-than-average human and not a perfect bishie doll! And he is not the narrator/leading protagonist.

- GUNNM / Battle Angel Alita - Yes, to guys, yes, contains fanservice. However, I like that how the artist has strong and ugly (...male...) characters and how attractive characters are drawn in different ways - the series don't suffer from "all the attractive characters look same, just switch the wig, the contacts and the outfit" disease. (Okay, this wasn't the best example... "Serious guys can look ugly but serious girls can't.")

The majority of musical shows/movies/games that aren't cutesy fluffy animals. Usually, the singers or dancers are attractive in some way/shape/form and have the talent to boot. Where's the good non-somewhat attractive ones?

On another side, the cliques of females or males who always bring people down for stupid reasons. If they didn't show this stuff on the air, then it wouldn't impact highschool in real life. My secondary school life was fine until those shows started airing.

According to media if you are an ugly male you are the bad guy
if you are incredibly sexy female you are villian
if you are in anyway female with a chest that is bigger than a pillow then you are damsel.
And if you are attractive male than the world bows down to you as you are there savior.

Pretty sure I just summed it up. Anything I'm missing?
